It is generally known that Theopompus is an author of high value for research on the history of Thrace and the Thracians in the 4th century BC. This assessment belongs to Chr. Danov. However, the extant fragments of Theopompus have not been studied - the significance of some of them has been noted in passing, and six have been wholly or partially translated. The fragments of Theopompus on Thrace and the Thracians have not been thoroughly analysed in foreign literature either. They are briefly commented on in the text-critical edition of F. Jacobi, who restores the integral text of everything preserved by Theopompus.
